    Quick summary of the article: women usually make up the majority of art museum staff. Is this a problem?

    In my opinion, no. Well, it is a problem, but not for the reasons you may suspect. While there are some who view women-dominated industries to be just as problematic as ones dominated by men, they’re not. For one, there are no systematic barriers in place deterring men from working in women-dominated fields (With the exception of working with young children–which is also a result of patriarchy). A helpful comparison is to think of the field of computer science, which is mainly made up of men. This is due to a number of reasons: women are raised to believe they are worse at math, women are discouraged from choosing fields that are considered too “hard” for them, women are driven away from the field because of a women-unfriendly environment, and so on.

    So women are deterred from computer science because they are neither wanted nor welcome (Often, not always! My mother is actually a software engineering professor and she is very successful in her field. It’s not impossible, simply more difficult). Is this the same reasoning behind men not working in art museums?

    No. No no no no no.

    How do I deal with a male friend who is a good person/friend, but whose sense of humor is mainly jokes dealing with gender/race/jews? Example:

    Me: Hey I’m gonna grab some water. Want some?
    Him: Yes, as a woman should. Fetch my water!
    Me: …..

    Him: Yo “n-word”!
    Me: Hey.
    Him: Wanna hang out?
    Me: Sure.
    Him: Cool. Bring your black boy with you!

    Me: These cookies are gross.
    Him: Yeah, they’re so Jew-y.
    Me: ….

    And anytime I try to bring up how not funny this is, he just guilts me by saying he’s just joking. IT DRIVES ME CRAZY and if it weren’t for this, he’d be such a good and fun guy. What do I do? 

    Reblogging this in case anyone happens to have any advice. 

    My advice is to slowly back away from that friendship. There’s no “if it weren’t for ____” because the fact of the matter is that that’s part of who he is and there is no “good friend” and “bad racist antisemitic sexist friend”, it’s all the same guy and if he can’t accept that he’s being offensive then I’d venture to say he’s not as good a guy as you make him out to be

    • Joseph: As I mentioned before, its a vicious cycle that's hard to break, but nothing is impossible. And now we're getting off topic into sexism. Let's tackle one issue at a time, please.
    • Me: Michelle Obama doesn't get to tackle one issue at a time. Intersectionality has to be at the center of any discussion of justice because that's the way the world works. Michelle Obama faces two levels of oppression in this country as do many other women of color and especially queer women of color, who have three times the oppression stacked against them. We can't just tackle one issue at a time because they all feed into each other.
    • Malcolm: Yeah the affects of homophoboia, sexism, and racism are practically the same
    • Me: The system exists to favor heterosexual, white, wealthy, financially-secure Christian men, who get to experience all of those privileges at once while marginalized minority groups get to be oppressed by one or more simultaneously. There is no way to divorce the issues.
    • Joseph: Well I'm not Michelle Obama, I'm a college student looking to get a job in the video game industry who gets really confused when trying to handle multiple things at once.
    • Me: Welp, I'm just gonna let that last comment speak for itself.
