As many of us who are members of academia know, most graduate students are not prepared for the political and social rigors of their first tenure track position. Most colleges and university environments are filled with roadblocks, pitfalls and other often unexpected challenges for newly minted Ph.D., Ed.D., MFA., J.D.s, and those with other terminal degrees. This is particularly true for junior faculty of color, women, Gay and Lesbian, and other underrepresented faculty.

Professors Dwayne Mack and Elwood Watson, the editors of a forthcoming collection of essays tentatively titled “Telling it Like it Is: A Practical Guide to Prepare Graduate Students of Color for their First Job in Academia,” invite faculty and administrators to submit abstracts related to their early and/or current experiences in academia. While stories of challenges, adversity and barriers are welcome, this is primarily an anthology for educators to mentor, rather than simply outline grievances. This edited volume will give faculty and administrators the opportunity to reflect and share strategies with graduate students of color on how to transition from graduate school to a tenure-track/tenure-stream position.

Contributors are asked to share their personal experiences on topics such as interviewing strategies, c.v. preparation, finding the right institutional fit, negotiating a contract, outlining a tenure and promotion plan, responding to microaggressions, macroaggressions, sexism, racism, homophobic attitudes, religious and cultural prejudice, avoiding cultural taxation, effective teaching and publishing strategies, managing service and teaching expectations, and developing meaningful relationships with junior and senior faculty. Other similarly related topics are welcomed as well.

We feel that this forthcoming collection of essays will provide a valuable service as well as prepare graduate students of color for professional success. We welcome collaborative pieces and submissions from scholars at majority White institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), small liberal arts colleges, Research I institutions, and Community Colleges.

Please send an abstract – no more than 350 words by July 29, 2013 to

What happens if you flip gendered book covers?

You are informed about a book’s perceived quality through a number of ways. Probably the biggest is the cover.

And the simple fact of the matter is, if you are a female author, you are much more likely to get the package that suggests the book is of a lower perceived quality. Because it’s “girly,” which is somehow inherently different and easier on the palate. A man and a woman can write books about the same subject matter, at the same level of quality, and that woman is simple more likely to get the soft-sell cover with the warm glow and the feeling of smooth jazz blowing off of it.

This idea that there are “girl books” and “boy books” and “chick lit” and “whatever is the guy equivalent of chick lit”* gives credit to absolutely no one, especially not the boys who will happily read stories by women, about women. As a lover of books and someone who supports readers and writers of both sexes, I would love a world in which books are freed from some of these constraints. Click here to read more about the perceived differences between ‘girl’ and ‘boy’ books.

This is a pretty interesting experiment from author Maureen Johnson.

I read this earlier today. Really, really worth looking at and thinking about. There’s a whole gallery of them.

  5. OKAY SO BASICALLY I GOT A FREE COPY OF THIS BOOK BECAUSE I WENT TO THE SOCIAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE EARLIER THIS YEAR

and I was already SUPER HYPE about it and then I found out that it’s a Routledge Reader, which I am OBSESSED WITH

I mean look at this Table of Contents (also here) and it’s also got a corresponding website with additional resources

but basically why I’m making this post is that while this book looks fucking amazing, it also retails for nearly $50 because it’s a Routledge Reader, so I’m throwing all this info up here to say if anybody sees a specific essay that looks really good that doesn’t turn up by Googling, my library at school has this pretty bitchin’ book scanner and I can make it into a pdf for you.

I’m probably gonna eventually scan the whole book, but if there’s anything anybody wants first I can prioritize that. (it’ll probably be at least a week before I can, though, because of spring break and the library’s closed this weekend and stuff)

so yeah!! just shoot me an ask and I’ll take note when I’m able to use the scanner again

    because knowledge should be free

(holy shit it has a table of intersections to show which essays deal with intersectionality i’m gonna die)

Excuse the sloppiness. I feel like people are more inclined to read things when they’re a picture, so I made this to give a really BRIEF and SHALLOW explanation of why “reverse sexism” is a bullshit way of describing what’s actually happening: patriarchy backfiring against men. There is a lot more to it than just this, though.

if u r single and wondering why it might be bc u buy clothes from spencers part deux

the responses to the first post i made were overwhelmingly positive:

    - 20 Examples That Spencer’s Gifts Hates Women (thanks for the shoutout, buzzfeed!)

    - Spencer’s Gifts Hates Women

    - If Your Son Is Wearing These Misogynistic Shirts, It’s Safe To Say You’ve Failed As A Parent

    - Grotesquely sexist t-shirts selling at Spencer’s Gifts raise ire

in more interesting(?) news, it seems that (correct me if i’m wrong) since i made my post and it “blew up,” spencer’s gifts has slashed their prices from 15 dollars to 10 dollars for these shirts:

    image

it’s not just one shirt, it’s all the shirts.

    in summation:

spencer’s gifts, you sell shirts directed towards shitty babymen. stop being gross.

If a guy wears one of these shirts, I hope their dick falls off.

It’s shit like this that comes to mind when people try to tell me sexism is getting better.

Where is my “must be 12 inches to mount” t-shirt?

Can I buy my “No fatties or guys with empty wallets” hat now?

Can I have my “I’ll make the sandwich when you get a job” tote yet?

  12. i just had a thought tho

using “pussy” as an insult to call somebody weak doesnt even make sense

cuz it doesnt make sense literally it only makes sense in a sexist interpretation because actual pussy is strong as fuck aint nothin weak about it

petition to stop calling people pussies and start callin them scrotes dude aint nothin weaker and more vulnerable than a ballsack
