all right i’m about to rant and hopefully hit all of my points in a way that makes sense to people who aren’t me but that’s kind of a lofty goal
anyway here we go
basically, the White Vegan tends to completely ignore any and all forms of intersectionality that doesn’t support their championing call. if they’re activists of any other kind, it’s usually only feminism, anti-fascism or LGBT rights - where they can again ignore the realities of intersectionality. they go for whatever activism is “hip” at the moment, which seems to almost never ever ever be anti-racism.
White Vegans are often quick to compare non-vegan diets to slavery or the Holocaust, essentially equating mass murder and oppression of human beings to animals, and shitting all over the current-day oppressions that people still face. they don’t care about what hardships you face in your own life because “the animals don’t care about your excuses,” and the plight of animals generally trumps the plight of their fellow human beings.
now don’t get me wrong - i’ve been a vegetarian since i was 11, and i’ll be the first one to tell you all the fucked up things that happen in factory farming, and if you do have the means to cut some or all animal products out of your diet for whatever reason and it would be relatively easy (with some adjustments) to do so, i’d definitely encourage you to. but that’s not reality.
in reality the food we eat is largely shaped by our culture, and in america that by and large means we’re brought up as meat-eaters in a meat-eating country and depending on where you are it can be hard as fuck to be a vegetarian, let alone a vegan. it’s hard for me to be a vegetarian while i’m at school, because the dining halls have limited choices - and the way my body functions i need a pretty high calorie intake to not get migraines and other problems, so i usually end up eating a loooot of carbs. i know it’ll be easier when i shop for myself, but that’s just not the reality of my life right now.
in terms of this girl in particular, she seems to deny the existence of food deserts or limited accessibility - here’s a great post on that topic if you’re unfamiliar with how that relates to the vegan argument. not everybody can just drive to the jewel osco down the street and then come home and cook dinner for their whole family.
besides switching out of culture & food accessibility issues, many people have health problems that could be complicated by going vegan. do White Vegans give a shit about this? no. they’ll preach from their own personal experience and tell you about how if THEY could do it, YOU can too. the White Vegan assumes that all non-vegans are exactly like them, only lazy or heartless.
and that’s just not true. sure, i don’t think people should eat meat if they can help it, but it’s not that fucking easy for everybody, especially if you were raised in this culture. and sometimes reality conflicts with our ideals, but the White Vegan believes that ideals can trump reality, and that’s why i ain’t having any of their shit until they grow up and join us on planet earth.
hope that made any kind of sense
